Table Talk on the ABC

The card game Euchre is played around family tables and senior citizens clubs throughout Australia. Called the 'poor man's bridge', it has been linked to card games as far away as Holland, France, Spain and Germany and was written about in England as early as the 1800s.

Although it is still played in pockets of the world, gone are the days of big tournaments for schoolkids. As ageing euchre players disappear, so do the secrets of a simple game played with bowers, tricks and partners.

Laura Grace ventures outside her euchre-playing family home to explore the origins of the game. Instead she finds out more about euchre players like herself.
